Our Mother & The Long Bereavement.
We had to stand by and watch as Alzheimer’s Disease slowly drew you into its web, taking in stages
your reason, independence, mobility and finally the ability to express what you were feeling in that
ultimate phase.
We tried to imagine what was happening in your mind when we looked into your blank unrecognising
eyes.
We held your hand and talked to you, telling you of events in the family you used to be so much a
part of, not knowing if you had been able to understand us.
Who knows what confusion, terror and desperation you endured in the solitary confinement of your
mind during the brief windows of clarity you had.
We preferred to believe that you were constantly re-living the happy events in the full life you had
before the web of dementia began weaving its self around you.
We have for years grieved for the way that you were gradually robbed of the life you had before
dementia.
It is still with sadness that we finally say goodbye.
We have done our grieving.
We are pleased that finally you will be re-united with the love of your life George.
When he passed away nearly 26 years ago I remember you saying with deep regret that you ought to
have been with him holding his hand when he died.
That no one should pass away without a loved one at their side holding their hand reassureing them
that they were loved.
As you drifted slowly and peacefully into that final sleep and you stopped breathing, Angela was
there to hold your hand to let you know that we still loved and cared for you.
We give thanks for the good life you did enjoy before dementia started.
We say our final goodbye to the shell that was our mother.
The spirit that drove it all along has already departed.
My Sister & I thank all those who are lighting candles and adding their tributes.
Our hearts go out to all those who's loved ones
are allso suffering from Alzheimere's (Dementia).
Lucy was cremated at 11am on the 17th September 2008.
